about

Magical Recreation in music of a summer in lockdown. Edward Newell has written a strikingly original piece. Communion is a brilliantly-conceived blend of music and sound, at once a deep musical meditation and an evocation of that first lockdown. Rhythmical Thursday evening clapping mingles with the chime of church bells, bursts of vibrant birdsong and the occasional sound of a distant car. Another hot day is coming to its end. We are transported back to the time when the clear blue skies of early summer looked down on a world of fear, grief, loneliness and the strange dislocation of everyday life. Yet Communion leaves us with a sense of peace and hope. While taking us back to the late spring of 2020, the piece, has a quality of timelessness.
